The final everybody wanted to see takes place today at the Alexandra Palace. Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump will battle it out for the £200,000 first prize and the prestigious Masters trophy.
Ronnie landed the spoils for followers again when hitting our correct score tip at 9/2. As we suggested, the slow starts for O’Sullivan were unlikely to continue. He wasted little time in opening up a 4-0 lead by the mid-session interval. Ding to his credit responded well with three frames on the bounce to make the Rocket think. The flurry only seemed to spur on the crowd favourite though and he won the next two to ice the match.
We suggested that Trump was the way to go if having a bet on the second semi-final. That proved to be the case, the final score was 6-4 but he was always looking the more likely. Both players let nerves get the better of them from frame five onwards which caused plenty of ordinarily simple misses, cue the ”ooohs and ahhhs” from the audience.
Our pre-tournament bet on there being no 147 in the tournament was under threat yesterday when Ding looked favourite to make the acheivement. Fortunately for us, he slipped up on the green and left us with what looks to be a great chance of landing the 3pt tip.
Today’s Betting Odds, Prediction and Tip
Ronnie/Trump was actually the favourite in the Name The Finalists market before the tournament began. It is also the final that many snooker fans would choose to watch as a spectacle.
Trump will not fear O’Sullivan the way many players do. In fact he even has a winning record over The Rocket in finals. He leads 5-3 including a recent Northern Ireland Open victory.
“I would rather have played someone easier,” joked Trump. “I have to go out and enjoy it. I see it as a challenge when other players might get scared of playing him. My record against him speaks for itself and I rise to the occasion.
What has been most impressive this tournament from the Bristol born Trump is his shot selection and safety nouse. Something that he has been found wanting for in the past. He’ll need every area of his game to be on point today when taking on the best player alive.
O’Sullivan who has 7 Masters wins to his name, also has 5 lost finals in this competition. He admitted being nervous for the first few frames of his semi-final.
“I was very nervous today, shaking in the first few frames and not handling that well. I managed to pot a few balls but did not feel serene as usual. You have to try and control it.”
“To win tournaments you have to be quite aggressive and make things happen. You don’t get many defensive players getting to finals these days and even the ones you think are defensive are actually attacking in their own ways.”
There will certainly be plenty of attacking and getting over on the 3.5 Total Centuries line looks wise. The players have combined for five centuries so far which is slightly below expectation for the two players. This is a longer match than the previous rounds (best of 19) and the players should have the chance to please the crowd with their normally regular big break building.
Whatever happens today, viewers will be entertained! If pushed for a Correct Score prediction, I’d have to say Ronnie 10-6. It’s been a great tournament to start the New Year and thanks all for reading each day.
