They are the best team in England and probably Europe but does that justify the extremely short odds of 1/3 with Coral which is the best industry price. Away in the Champions League knock-out stages is rarely totally straight-forward.
City have already shown a wobble or two in their European campaign when in the group stages. They lost at home to Lyon 2-1 and were held to a 2-2 draw away in France. They managed to beat German opponents Hoffenheim but only by one goal both home and away, they conceded in both those matches too.
Schalke’s route here saw them come 2nd in a group with no real European giant to contend with. Porto, Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow made up the non-premium collection of teams. The only conceded 1 goal at home over the 3 matches, winning 2 and drawing 1-1 with Porto in the other.
It looks likely they will set up to contain Man City and attempt to hit on the counter. The visitors will be afforded plenty of the ball in their own half and players like Laporte will rack up plenty of passes. He is still the Premier League player with the highest passing accuracy this season.
Guardiola is going to be looking to put this tie to bed in the 1st leg and was able to rest several key players including Laporte, Aguero and Sterling when facing Newport on the weekend in the FA Cup. Sane may well get a run against his former side but the recent performances of Sterling and Bernardo Silva have been highly praised by the manager.
City’s recent form has been very impressive, winning 9 of their previous 10. The one slip was a very uncharacteristic loss to Newcastle where complacency seemed to be their undoing.
Schalke have been far less consistent, their last 10 matches have seen 3 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses. That form won’t fill the hosts with confidence.
Despite Schalke’s unconvincing form, The Citizens’ defensive fragility in this competition puts us off taking any bets on them in the 1×2 or Handicap markets. We think that Schalke may offer resistence for the first 45 minutes but ultimately buckle. Odds of 7/2 at BetVictor about the match being level at half-time and City winning full-time look generous.
