England stuck five past the Czechs on Friday and will look to pick up where they left off when facing Montenegro tonight in Podgorica. This assignment will be slightly trickier we feel but Southgate’s men should manage to leave with three points.
England were clinical at Wembley it’s fair to say but also benefitted massively from several slices of fortune including a wild own goal and an incredible deflection for a couple of the goals. England to replicate that result is a best priced 33/1 with Paddy Power. Not sure it’ll be quite that convincing tonight and perming the 2-0 and 2-1 looks a more prudent move.
Montenegro played out a 1-1 draw away to Bulgaria slightly earlier on Friday. They led until an 83rd minute penalty was given against them. The result will be seen as a positive though on the whole and the team will rely on it’s home form against the other teams in the group.
It’s highly probable they will play five across midfield and have Beqiraj leading the line up front. He will probably be very isolated for much of the game and the Three Lions should have the vast majority of possession.
The build-up play on Friday was particularly patient with Maguire and Keane seeing massive amounts of the ball and keeping it well. Chilwell did enough to retain his place on the left but should have been more positive.
There was very little effort from the left to beat a man out wide and the heat mapping of England passes were particularly focussed around the centre of the park. That led to an England corner count of only three which was far lower than the market expected.
Advice for followers is to take England -1 on the Asian Handicap. The gulf in class is high here and despite a hostile environment, Gareth Southgate’s Young Lions should prevail.
