The bigger names are taking a bit of a break with the clay season and Roland-Garros imminent but the ATP Houston event has attracted some decent mid-level hard court players this week. Of those our pick is Reilly Opelka each way at 9/1 with William Hill.
Although he may sound Irish he is in fact American and is seen by some of the former players on the commentary circuit as the best the US has had to offer since Pete Sampras. He’s 7 feet tall, with a 140 MPH serve and in winning his first ATP title earlier this year – at just 21 years of age – he hit 43 aces in the semi-final and another 43 in the final. That’s over a set in the bank before you start. On the way to winning the tournament he took out current #10 John Isner, repeating his Australian Open victory over him from the start of the year.
As a junior Wimbledon Champion we’re hoping to get decent odds on him to repeat in this year’s men’s draw. Tall, big servers are well suited to the grass and have made it to the last 3 finals so keep an eye out for that but in the meantime we’re looking for him to justify our faith by picking up a second title this week in Houston.
