Raymond van Barneveld has left the building, and possibly the sport altogether depending on what day you catch him, and so 8 competitors are now vying for a spot at the O2 in a few weeks. You’d imagine that the top two – Rob Cross and Michael van Gerwen – are there already but for the rest there is most definitely work still to do.
Despite the slight oddity of this year’s competition due to Gary Anderson’s withdrawal the Premier League generally represents the best group of darts players in the world. As such, a general rule of thumb that has served well over the years is that it is compulsory to back anyone at the odds of 5/1 or more. In the past that meant opposing Phil Taylor on a regular basis and more recently Gary Anderson too. Right now it means betting against Michael van Gerwen. It is rare that anyone should really be that big a price against a fellow Premier League competitor and the results prove that.
You may baulk at this prospect but of his ten games this year he’s only won six of them and is by no means certain to keep up his 100% record of topping the table. Whether you go for an outright win, a lay or maybe the draw no bet option you’d be in Premier League profit just from backing Wade and Gurney against him. If you had the draw on your side in the matches with Henderson and Price too you’d be absolutely rolling in it.
This brings us to Michael Smith who is slowly but surely getting back to form following an operation and who arguably should have beaten Peter Wright last week. He, like many others has often been on the wrong end of results against MVG but he appears to be getting closer to catching him. Van Gerwen’s doubles remain a problem and I still can’t quite work out how he scraped a draw with Gerwen Price from 5-1 down last time out.
In conclusion the best price of 11-2 with Betfair does not accurately represent Smith’s chances of victory in my opinion and as such I will be backing him in this must-win match against Michael van Gerwen.
