While many eyes will be glued to the Manchester United v Barcelona clash there will be an equally absorbing tussle taking place in Holland between a vibrant young Ajax side and the Old Lady that is Juventus.
The Italian side have been knocking on the door for the past few years but their aging squad only got to this stage of the competition by the grace of Cristiano. The Serie A title is all but sewn up though so they can turn their full focus towards the Champions League now.
Ajax meanwhile saw off Real Madrid in the last round and are in great form, albeit facing a tougher task in the Eredivisie, neck and neck as they are with PSV despite having beaten those rivals 3-1 a couple of weeks ago.
This match offers a lot of possibilities. I personally find the prices a little short to back Ajax for the win or to qualify and while the odds of 40/1 on the outright market are enticing, it’s a big ask for this young Dutch side to get past Juventus, Man City / Tottenham and then presumably Liverpool or Barcelona.
I do however think that Ajax will cause Juventus all kinds of problems. They’ve spanked both of their big domestic rivals at home and have scored 12 goals in their last 3 games. In the group stages they averaged 4-4 with Bayern Munich and put 4 past the aforementioned Real Madrid, at the Bernabau no less, last month to qualify.
As far as Juventus are concerned the few stumbles that they’ve had were mostly on the road. A draw and a defeat to Atalanta in the league and cup respectively and of course the 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid. Famously they avenged that loss but went on to get beaten at Genoa in the next league game. While Ajax had a routine win at Willem II at the weekend Juventus laboured to victory against AC Milan.
All things considered then we’ve got to go for Ajax getting among the goals and midfielder Donny van de Beek is the man to provide them. He’s scored first in his last two games but as he’s facing stiffer opposition here we’ll take the 6/1 on him to score at any time with BetFred.
