The away / home or home / away half time / full time bet is a bit like the holy grail. It’s one of the most lucrative football bets to land but also one of the most elusive. Occasionally though, like a twitching needle on the Richter scale, there are some warning signs that something is imminent. Wolverhampton Wanderers’ trip to Southampton is just such an occasion.
Southampton, though much improved from the days of Mark Hughes, have not managed to eradicate their habit of throwing away leads. At home in the Premier League nobody has done this more frequently. Just last week against Liverpool the same thing occurred.
Where Wolves are concerned the opposite is true when they are on the road, making more comebacks than the other away teams in the league. Last week against Watford the reverse was true, in heartbreaking fashion so they’ll be eager to make amends against the Saints.
Neither side specialises in keeping clean sheets so we can expect a few goals and based on the evidence so far this season an opener from the home side is most likely. It is entirely possible that Wolves carry some of the baggage from the FA Cup into this game and start sluggishly too. However in their quest to be the best of the rest you would imagine pride and a need for revenge would kick in and they can get themselves back in the game.
This is of course not an exact science but at these odds it doesn’t need to be. The general trends for both teams have converged so we will make a small investment on Southampton / Wolves in the half time / full time market. Given that Southampton are looking a better side these days and that Wolves were the ‘bottlers’ last week it would be prudent to back Wolves / Southampton too just in case.
