Anyone remember when Tottenham were actually good? It’s a struggle isn’t? Hammering Dortmund at home in February is the last truly dominant performance that springs to mind.
Yeah they got past Man City in the Champions League but that needed a last second VAR decision and it could have gone either way. They sacked off the cups early doors and then fell away in the league when the title was no longer possible. In short they have not been much cop for a while.
Versus Ajax they’ll certainly need to turn up and maybe there is a big game left in them this season. The dynamics of this match will certainly be interesting. Ajax will presumably play the way they have all season, hassling and harrying their opponents, making slick passes and terrorising more experienced opposition. Tottenham will have to decide whether or not to go for it from the start or try and keep their control and composure, waiting for the opportunity they need to get back in the tie. At only 1-0 down that is something they can certainly look at doing.
Either way there’s every chance that this tie can go to the wire and as a result we’re looking at the last goalscorer market today. If Tottenham are winning then Ajax will be on the attack and if the home side are going through then Spurs will need to gamble and potentially leave themselves exposed. This brings us to the veteran Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. He’s been on the bench for the majority of the season, making late appearances but still scoring 15 league goals. When Ajax have rested players either before or after Europe he’s put in a shift and banged them in. Between the Juventus ties he got a hat trick and scored the winner in the match after. He also scored two to help Ajax win the Dutch Cup Final at the weekend.
As a result we’ll be backing him to get the last goal tonight. It is possible that he could come on too late to get a chance which would make it a loser so we’ll just be going half a point on this. If he doesn’t get on for whatever reason we get a refund. He clearly still retains a killer instinct so we’ll be taking a punt at 5/1.
