By the end of tonight we’ll know who’s facing who at the O2 next week. Rob Cross and MVG have already qualified but in which order remains to be seen. We’ll also find out who will join them from Price, Wade, Gurney or Suljovic. Wade is in the driving seat on 18 points with Gurney and Suljovic on 17 and Price on 18. This week’s fixtures are below:
Gerwyn Price v Peter Wright
Daryl Gurney v Michael Smith
Michael van Gerwen v Mensur Suljovic
James Wade v Rob Cross
Price and Gurney face the already eliminated Wright and Smith who are also in the worst form. They ought to win their matches after which they’ll be hoping that other results go their way. Wade and Suljovic have significantly more difficult tasks ahead of them although Wade is in the best form of everyone right now.
Given that we expect Gurney to win that will probably be enough to see him through to next week where he would face Cross or van Gerwen in the semi-final. He’s currently 16/1 on the outright market to take the title which to me holds a lot of value. Facing van Gerwen should hold little fear for the Irishman given that he’s won their last 3 televised matches. There was a European Tour defeat this month to factor in but overall he’ll have every chance should he face MVG either in the semi-final or the final itself.
If things go to plan the quartet will be completed by Cross and Wade who Gurney has a 40 and 44 per cent record against respectively, statistics that will not stop him from sleeping at night. Aside from that Gurney, his lunacy aside at the end of last week’s match, is showing a lot of steel. From beating MVG the week before he knew a result against Gerwen Price was crucial in Sheffield.
Coming from 6-3 down to get the draw was impressive enough. Winning the last leg against the throw and taking out the double 16 with his last dart was the icing on the cake there. Given his actions after that it’s clear that he was really feeling the heat but he managed to withstand the pressure and earn a share of the points. He’s done enough in my view to justify some action at the odds available.
