There’s a bit of life in the 2018-19 season yet and today’s action comes from Holland. The Eredivisie only gets two Champions League spots and two Europa League places so that’s what the top four are usually fighting four. Helping to keep interest until the very end of the season is the four team Europa League play off for the sides ranked 5th to 8th. With a relegation play off too hardly any teams had the chance to take it easy and settle for a mid-table position, almost everyone had something to play for going into the last few fixtures.
We’re going to concentrate on the second leg of Vitesse v FC Groningen today. Going into the first leg Vitesse had only lost one in five – to Ajax – and Groningen had only won one in five. Despite this Groningen managed to take a 2-1 lead into today’s game. Vitesse at home are an entirely different proposition however. They’ve only lost once all season, again to Ajax, who along with PSV are the only sides to have scored more at home than Vitesse. They ship goals too though, roughly 1.5 per game which explains why both teams have scored in roughly 90% of their home games. Vitesse to win and both teams to score has come in just over half the time at home, in both markets they are the leaders in Holland and few eclipse them across Europe as a whole.
Based on these figures – and the fact that Vitesse have won the last four corresponding home fixtures – it seems likely that Groningen will lose the match, if not necessarily the tie itself. If only Ajax could go there and get a win it’s asking for a lot for one of the worst away sides in the division to prevail in 90 minutes. However, given the home side’s gung-ho approach we can expect goals on both sides so we’ll be taking Vitesse to win and both teams to score at 12/5 with Betfred.
