The 2nd Grand Slam of the tennis season is under way in Paris with Rafael Nadal installed as favourite in the men’s draw. We like to oppose Nadal when we can and we did so successfully in Barcelona recently. It would be tempting to do the same at Roland Garros but he’s hit form at the right time having just won the Italian Open so we won’t take that route this time.
Novak Djokovic is next in the betting and he’s looking to take his 4th consecutive Grand Slam. That seems unlikely given that he’s only taken this title once and there is now a swarm of young players who could at least weaken him for later in the tournament if not take him out themselves.
Federer is back for the first time in 4 years and earned his place in the second round on Sunday. He’ll need a run of short and sharp three set matches to stand any chance of taking the title but again this seems improbable.
Nadal sits at odds-on with most bookies which is not of particular interest to us. For an investment to be made we need an established clay court player who also has demonstrated an ability to beat Nadal. Our man is Fabio Fognini.
Fabio is very highly strung to say the least and could well be the subject of any big drama this fortnight given that Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn. He’s a great clay court player but unfortunately has been known to throw in the towel more than once. He can be serenely sailing into the next round one minute and then find himself match points down the next.
However it’s only a month ago that Fognini did exactly what we require of him in Paris – beat Nadal and take the title. A 6-4, 6-2 win in the semi-final was the prelude to beating Dusan Lajovic in the Monte Carlo Masters final last month.
Like Nadal he’s in form just when he needs to be and although there are clear drawbacks in backing him the odds of 100/1 more than make up for that so we’ll be on the Italian with 888sport.
