Novak Djokovic’s path to the 4th round of the French Open has been straightforward so far with three wins in straight sets. He hasn’t had the hardest opposition in fairness but that could well change today as he faces Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany.
If we go purely by the rankings – Struff at 45, Djokovic at 1 – we wouldn’t give him a shot but then again nobody fancied a certain tubby Mexican fella in the boxing and we know what happened there. When we delve into Struff’s results this year though it’s clear that there’s a lot more going on.
This year alone Struff has beaten five top 10 players including Zverev and Tsitsipas in the top 10 and the mercurial Nick Kyrgios. He’s also beaten US Open winner Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic and faced Nadal for the first time – on clay too –narrowly losing 7-5, 7-5. The German is on his best run at the French Open having beaten 13th seed Borna Coric 11-9 in the final set on Saturday.
This will be the second time that these two have met with Djokovic taking the win in 2017. It was a topsy-turvy match with multiple breaks of serve ending in a 7-6, 6-3 for the Serb. Most players have a humbling record against Novak which puts them at a disadvantage when they face him but that isn’t the case on this occasion.
We need to also remember that the French Open has proved the most problematic tournament for Djokovic throughout his career, having ‘only’ made the final 4 times and winning the title just once. With all that in mind 15/1 for a Struff upset seems more than fair so we’ll be taking on Djokovic today.
