The phrase “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” applies today as Alexander Zverev, the conqueror of our 100/1 outright pick Fabio Fognini, takes on Novak Djokovic in the last quarter-final at Roland Garros.
Unlike the womens’ side of the draw where seeds have been tumbling all over the place the old guard in the men’s draw have been keeping up their end. Federer and Wawrinka made the last eight with Roger advancing and Rafael Nadal has coasted into the semi-final.
Djokovic has not been tested at all yet which may prove problematic for him now that the serious business starts. From our point of view a fully road tested Zverev might be the man for that today. Fognini took the first set in the previous round and had he broken the German mid second set he may well have gone on to win the match. Zverev however managed to hang on, stepping forward to take the game to the Italian and his more aggressive play saw him get the job done.
Although this is his best Grand Slam run he’s not had problems elsewhere as his 5th place in the tour ranking demonstrates. Last year he became the only active player outside the big four to own 3 or more 1000 Masters titles and he’s the youngest to win successive titles on different surfaces. He’s still only 22 and at 6 foot 5 he has the power and reach to trouble anyone.
Zverev has a 50% record against Federer and Djokovic, having beaten the former on grass and importantly the latter on clay. Only Nadal has any kind of hold over him with a 5-0 record but as he isn’t playing the Spaniard today that’s not of immediate concern. Zverev and Djokovic have similar games but the German has the height and reach advantage and ten years on the Serb. He’s also had to battle during the last ten days which Novak has not so we’ll be availing ourselves of the 6/1 with Matchbook.
