We had a couple of genuinely enjoyable games on Saturday as Holland got the better of a tough Cameroon side and Canada beat New Zealand. The Cameroon players were robust in the challenge to say the least but the Dutch ladies played the better football to run out 3-1 winners. Canada played some of the best football so far and kept New Zealand pinned back for the bulk of the game. Unfortunately for us the Kiwis couldn’t hold out for a draw and bring us the win on the handicap, losing 2-0 in the end.
Sunday sees two monster mismatches according to the odds with the USA, fresh from a 13-0 win, taking on Chile and Sweden playing America’s victims – Thailand. Chile and Thailand are 80/1 and 100/1 respectively to win their matches. Now there could be a red card and penalty in the first minute or two for one of these and their might be a shock but we might get invaded by aliens too. The by-product of such extreme odds is that there’s no value to be found in most of the markets. Goal overs are ridiculously short as are goalscoring odds so we’ll just watch the games and see what happens.
The bet of the day therefore comes in the Copa America where Uruguay take on Ecuador. Uruguay were the best South American team at last year’s World Cup, seeing off European Champions Portugal before going out to eventual winners France. They’ve still got Godin, Suarez and Cavani and have exciting youth players like Maxi Gomez. Brazil struggled versus Bolivia until a second half penalty opened the door and they couldn’t take the pressure last time they hosted a major tournament. Argentina lost their first game versus Columbia too so a solid Uruguay win v Ecuador could end up being the basis for a good run.
