We’re at the end of the group stage of the World Cup now with the final games taking place simultaneously as usual. Today’s fixtures are as follows:
17:00 BST – Group B
China v Spain
South Africa v Germany
20:00 BST – Group A
South Korea v Norway
Nigeria v France
France are already through in Group A, presumably to be followed by Norway and possibly one other. In Group B the Germans have qualified with China and Spain playing for 2nd place. The vagaries of a 24 team tournament mean that the four best 3rd placed teams will enter the knockout stage along with the top 2 in each group. There not enough quality sides to justify a 24 team event which is in itself an issue but the situation where 3rd place teams can go through leads to a number of further problems. Of course FIFA knows all so we just have to deal with what we’re given and today it may even work to our advantage.
Specifically we’re looking at the China v Spain game this afternoon. Ordinarily they’d be going all out to take 2nd place and qualify as they both sit on 3 points. Both lost 1-0 to Germany and both beat South Africa with Spain earning the more comfortable victory. Today the situation is different with the emphasis being on avoiding defeat rather than winning. A draw will send Spain through in 2nd place and probably China through in 3rd. A loss for either makes them vulnerable to the teams finishing third in other groups.
Taking into account their previous results it seems that we have two fairly evenly matched sides and bearing in mind what we’ve said above there is little need for a full blooded contest here. Given the number of own goals that have been scored in the tournament so far we’re going to back no goalscorer for this match. No goalscorer covers an entirely possible 0-0 result and a 1-0 either way should anyone divert the ball into their own net.
