The last teams in the knockout stages will be finalised today as Groups E and F reach their conclusion. We already know that Holland and Canada are through with their rankings to be determined by their meeting this afternoon. Similarly, we know that the USA and Sweden have qualified with the result of their clash tonight determining who comes top.
Brazil are through as a 3rd placed team as are China which leaves the other two spots open to the winners of Cameroon v New Zealand and Chile v Thailand. Finishing with a win and a better goal difference of -2 will be required to usurp Nigeria and that will be a big ask for Chile or Thailand given the beatings they’ve suffered thus far.
Yesterday England joined France and Germany with 3 wins out of 3 and Japan followed them out of the group. Argentina may yet join them although it will be quite an ask with just two points. The Argentines finally found their scoring boots in coming back from 3-0 down with roughly 15 minutes to go to snatch a draw. That result leaves Scotland down and out for France 2019.
There will be a day’s hiatus in the World Cup which resumes on Saturday with the first two matches in the last 16. We’ll be keeping an eye on those games as well as the Copa America, CONCACAF Gold Cup and the African Cup of Nations and when we see some value we’ll let you know so don’t forget to check back tomorrow.
