It’s England’s turn today in the knockout stages and in the past the women have been far from immune to the traditional woes of the men’s national team. There ought not be a problem today but Cameroon are a physically tough side and the emphasis will be on keeping a clear head and winning through superior football. The odds For an England win are quite horrendous though but Cameroon are not big enough to consider backing either. Goals have not been free flowing compared to some teams in this tournament so we’ll just watch this one on the assumption that England progress, one way or another.
In the evening France meet Brazil and it’s a similar story with the bookmakers. France are quite heavy favourites although they are facing the best 3rd placed side in the tournament. Brazil could even have topped their group had they not thrown away a 2-0 lead against Australia but wins against Jamaica and Italy saw them also take 6 points.
France have not been convincing since their 4-0 opener but that was against South Korea. There is a line of form with Norway, who knocked out Australia on penalties on Saturday, which suggests that France are marginally better than Brazil right now but possibly not much more. Aside from that we have to accept that Brazil are a team that will cause the French problem. Not necessarily to the point that they eliminate the hosts but they certainly present a goal threat.
Cristiane has been knocking the goals in so far but we’re just siding with Marta for our investment today. Aside from now solely owning the record for most World Cup goals she’s opened the scoring from the spot in the last two games and her odds are elevated due to France being such strong favourites.
