France and England joined Norway and Germany in the quarter-finals but neither had things easy on Sunday. For England the flying elbows and thrown out toys were a bigger issue than the football that Cameroon offered. However, like England – Columbia in the men’s World Cup last year, a bigger emphasis on scoring goals could have paid dividends for the African team. In the end England went through with a 3-0 victory and have a date with Norway on the 27th.
France were taken to extra-time by a brave Brazil and continue to look uncertain at times. The ‘reward’ for their 106th minute winner is likely to be a date with the USA who meet Spain today. Based on the evidence so far the hosts will be eliminated from the tournament at that stage. The more intriguing tie takes place this evening as Sweden take on Canada.
Both sides have been decent to watch thus far and it’s a really tough game to call so we won’t try. It should be an entertaining match with the winner qualifying to play Germany next which will obviously be a serious test. As far as the USA are concerned we’re not brave enough to take them on right now, they’re simply too good and should fulfil their obligations at 2/5. Should the Americans show signs of vulnerability we’ll bear that in mind for later on and possibly a game against England but we won’t be betting today.
