The rain played havoc with the order of play on Monday but hopefully we’ll have better luck today. A number of matches never got started and there are a few that need to play to a finish at some point this afternoon. The match between Sam Stosur and Sofia Kenin is what takes our eye today.
They’ve met once before, last year on clay, with Stosur winning 6-3, 6-2. Stosur of course is a former Grand Slam winner in singles in 2011 and won the Australian Open doubles this year so she’s not to be underestimated. However her opponent, aged just 20, has come on in leaps and bounds since then and is now ranked 28 in the world.
Her route there has seen her win two singles titles this year, most importantly for our purposes the Mallorca event last week on grass. This was a great follow up to knocking Serena Williams out of the French Open and taking a set off eventual winner Ash Barty. She also took a set from Simona Halep at this year’s Austrailan Open.
Sam Stosur doesn’t really have a singles ranking to speak of anymore. It’s rare for her to have any kind of meaningful run in any singles tournament and of the four Grand Slams she’s had the least joy on the grass at Wimbledon. Kenin’s game is on the up and she’s proven her grass court prowess. Furthermore she eliminated Elise Mertens in Mallorca who dealt with Stosur quite comfortably in the previous round.
It comes as a surprise then that Kenin is backable today with 4/7 generally available but a slightly better 3/5 there for the taking with 888, which we’ll do to a 2 point stake.
