The last 8 will be completed today with two of the closer ties in the knockout stages taking place. Italy or China will play the winners of Holland v Japan in the easier half of the draw. Germany or Sweden would be the semi-final opposition.
Monday saw the USA scrape past Spain courtesy of two penalties and the weaknesses that we were looking for have appeared. They are clearly a good team but the air of invincibility has deteriorated somewhat now. Who we take them on with remains to be seen.
The temptation it to back England on the outright market. There we’d be making the assumption that they will beat Norway which remains to be seen. However, we will lose France or the USA – the two favourites – in the next round so there’s a potential cash-out opportunity there.
Alternatively, just like we would in the men’s game, we’d look at the Germans. They’ve been steadily going about their business and have won all four games to nil so far. The advantage here, aside from how good they are, is that they’re away from the England – France – USA side of the draw but their odds reflect that to an extent. We’d have to consider Sweden who they face next as well as the winners of today’s matches too though.
Going back to those games Holland are favourites to go through one way or another and that seems pretty fair. The Italy v China game is where we’re going to be placing our money. Italy have been a surprise so far in this tournament, winning the group with Australia and Brazil. Topping the group meant they avoided Norway and France and they did so primarily by hammering Jamaica, one of the weakest participating sides.
China went though as one of the best 3rd placed sides courtesy of a 1-0 win against South Africa. Their 3 games so far have seen just two goals, one for and one against. The knockout games have been tense affairs and Monday’s matches saw both favourites level at half-time before taking the win in the second half. Italy look the better team but it may take a while for them to get the better of China so we’re going to take the 21/5 on Draw / Italy on the half-time / full-time market.
