England kick off the quarter-finals today taking on a durable Norwegian side. However, if Cameroon had played football rather than silly buggers in the previous round they might have been lining up against Norway instead. It’s safe to assume that today’s opponents will take a different approach and if England aren’t better defensively this evening they may come a cropper.
England or Norway’s half of the draw is completed by France and the USA who meet on Friday night. Norway aside these teams make up three of the top four in the outright betting for the tournament. We’ll definitely lose one of them in the next two days and if Norway step up we could lose all three eventually. It’s not something to be expected but it’s a sufficient incentive to investigate the other half of the draw for out bet.
We have one team in the tournament that has been close to perfection and that’s Germany. Played four, won four, for nine and against zero. They earned a greater win over Nigeria than the French could and though given a tough time by Spain in the group stage they didn’t concede against them unlike the USA. Germany are ranked second in the world currently but that result suggests that if there is gap between the USA and Germany it isn’t that great.
Although they have Sweden on Saturday with the prize of a semi-final against either Holland or Italy they are in the part of the draw we’d want them to be in order to back them. Italy have played well and the Netherlands are European champions but they don’t have the record that Germany have or the historical pedigree in the women’s game.
