The top two teams in the betting clash today for the pleasure of taking on Phil Neville’s England on Tuesday. France have got the results but the performances have not always been convincing. The USA have had results and performances but showed their first signs of fragility in the last round against Spain.
England await courtesy of a 3-0 win over Norway that was both impressive and bemusing in equal measure. Defensively things were shambolic at times but when last ditch clearances turned into attacks England showed their true strength. A late missed penalty would have put a sheen on a good performance in many respects but they’ll concede against better opposition.
It’s becoming apparent that France’s position as 2nd favourites may be a false one. Where they beat Norway 2-1 in the group stage, England have just won 3-0. When they’ve played teams with a little about them they’ve conceded. Clean sheets have only come against Korea and Nigeria.
That’s not to say they don’t offer a goal threat of their own though. They have scored in every game so far and the USA’s match against Spain will have given them hope. It also gives us enough concern not to simply back the USA to win in 90 minutes, especially when extra time is a possibility, while their odds to qualify are a little short too.
We do expect USA goals though and for that reason we’re going to back Megan Rapinoe each way as first goalscorer. The two smartly struck penalties that she scored in the last round added to her well taken goal v Thailand which put them 9-0 up in their 13-0 win. Aside from the quality of the finish the desire to keep punishing their opponents even with such a lead, and the run to meet the ball even with 80 minutes gone show the kind of player we’re dealing with.
