England meet the USA today in the first semi-final of the Women’s World Cup. The two sides have already met this year in the SheBelieves Cup resulting in a 2-2 draw and we’re expecting something similar this evening. The USA have had the tougher matches in the knockout stages earning 2-1 wins against both Spain and France. England on the other hand have earned 3-0 victories against Cameroon and Norway. Those clean sheet stats are slightly misleading though – both Cameroon and Norway had chances and only some last-ditch and frankly, panicked, defending stopped them getting on the scoresheet.
The USA have scored at least two goals in every match so far and in Megan Rapinoe – who we successfully backed to score first in the last game – also possess the joint leading goalscorer. She has five goals along with two other players in today’s match, her team-mate Alex Morgan and England’s Ellen White. That bodes well for there being goals alongside the fact the USA are conceding now that they’re playing better opposition than they met in their group.
England have scored two against everyone except Argentina but at the moment only Scotland have scored against them. As mentioned above that smacks of a defensive solidity that simply isn’t there but even if it was it would be hard to see them stopping the USA hitting the net at some point. Equally it seems likely that England’s goal threat will prove too much for the USA to completely contain over the 90 minutes. The USA are favourites to go through but that wouldn’t be a comfortable investment with either head or heart whereas we like William Hill’s even money offering on both teams to score.
