Not to be again for England in the Women’s World Cup after defeat to the USA. They’re joined by Sweden in today’s play-off following their defeat to the Netherlands. It’s something of a surprise that this match still occurs in any World Cup as nobody really wants it, least of all the players who’d rather be playing on Sunday in the final. Phil Neville has promised to play his strongest team possible to try and leave the tournament on a high note and there’s no reason why Sweden wouldn’t do the same.
In the men’s World Cup these fixtures often see a lot of goals. You have two tired teams with nothing left to lose playing with the freedom of a club team that’s just been relegated. The USA match aside England have shown plenty of firepower to continue that trend on their own and of course have had their wobbles defensively. With the pressure off Sweden can be expected to have a go too so we’re backing over 2.5 goals.
