Day 6 of Wimbledon is here as the last group of players settle down to complete the third round. In the men’s draw Djokovic is through but had a tougher game than he may have expected against Hubert Hurkacz. Nadal and Federer aim to join him today. In the last round Nadal survived his hostile and enthralling encounter with Nick Kyrgios while Federer had an easier task against a British wild card.
Federer has not been entirely convincing though and he caused concern for his fans when going a set down in his first game against Lloyd Harris – ranked 86 in the world. At 37 he does have off periods in matches more often than he used to but that’s understandable. When these occur his serve often starts to falter and it will be up to Lucas Pouille, his opponent today, to exert the necessary pressure to make that happen.
Pouille has been on and off recently but hit a career high ranking of 18 last March. At the 2016 US Open he got the better of Rafael Nadal in a final set tie-break sets proving that he’s a worthy adversary for any opponent. That win saw him make his second Grand Slam quarter-final run of his career and that year having done the same at Wimbledon. He’s struggled to recapture that form until January when he made the semi-final of the Australian Open.
He and Federer have only met once before which saw a hard court win for the Swiss so history doesn’t have much of a bearing on this. What is important is that Pouille is approaching his peak years, has shown ability on grass and has demonstrated that he has the mental toughness to overcome one of the greatest players of all time in Rafael Nadal. At almost 10/1 with Matchbook we’re willing to give him a go. He’s still got a hell of a task on his hands today but if Federer falters we’re hoping he’ll be there to pick up the pieces.
