We had a great day of tennis on Monday with so many matches and not enough TVs to take it all in. The men’s tournament went as expected with the possible exception of Milos Raonic making his exit, confirming our hypothesis yesterday that this isn’t the year for the massive servers. In the ladies’ draw there was carnage with Ash Barty being sent home along with Kvitova and Pliskova, that’s two of the top three seeds and three from the top ten. This is the first time that four unseeded players have made the quarter-finals since 32 seeds were introduced.
The blokes get today off while the ladies are all back in action. The matches are as follows, in draw order:
- Serena Williams v Alison Riske
- Barbora Strycova v Jo Konta
- Elina Svitolina v Karolina Muchova
- Simona Halep v Shuai Zhang
Williams is now the favourite, an uneasy one really, but there’s no doubt she’s playing herself into fitness and form, helped by her doubles partnership with Andy Murray no doubt. Alison Riske should not be discounted and with Konta hopefully to follow Serena has her work cut out to make the final. Halep performed as we hoped she would and due to the other eliminations she is now shorter than 3/1 for the tournament from the 8/1 we backed her at. We’re more than happy to stand on that but if Williams and Konta do meet later we’ll be taking an interest if the price is right.
The big three in the men’s game only conceded 19 games between them and given their immense grass court experience compared to the others we can’t see beyond two of them making the final. Djokovic remains the as yet untested odds-on favourite – he faces Goffin today who’s playing well and took a set of Nadal at Roland Garros. Nadal and Federer have easier matches on paper and it would be a major shock if they don’t meet in the semi-final. The bookies go 7/2 the pair on the outright market but we’re already on Nadal at 4/1 and don’t intend to do anything else at the moment. The men’s fixtures with draw are below:
- Novak Djokovic v David Goffin
- Guido Pella v Roberto Bautista-Agut
- Sam Querrey v Rafael Nadal
- Kei Nishikori v Roger Federer
