This week we’ve got some of the lower ranked players competing while those who made week two of Wimbledon take a hard-earned break. There are a few events going on but the clay court event on the women’s tour in Switzerland is where we’re looking today. Our old friend Sam Stosur is competing against Allie Kiick of the United States.
Stosur is at the stage of her singles career where we’ll take her on with a lot of players on the tour. She’s quite often listed as the default favourite by the bookies, possibly because of her historical success in singles and recent wins in doubles competitions. However, she’s lost 17 of her 29 singles matches this year so as long as we keep the odds on our side we can continue to oppose her.
Today she plays the superbly named Allie Kiick who is trying to rebuild her career after encountering a number of health issues at the tender age of 24. She was essentially out of the game for three years due to knee problems and being diagnosed with skin cancer. Thankfully she seems to have overcome all of that and is making a comeback which should see her enter the top 100 in the near future.
This bet is less about what she can do, although her resurrected career is of interest, and more about the vulnerabilities of Stosur. She has been playing for over 20 years now and on the singles circuit is finding wins harder to come by these days. She does have a relatively high profile win over Sofia Kenin recently but Kenin was coming off a title win in Mallorca and was running on fumes that day. That result is not necessarily representative of Stosur’s current career trajectory so we’re going to side with the American.
