Aspinall going out was a bit of a surprise but he faced a seasoned veteran in Mervyn King. Cullen being annihilated is probably the result of the round, the wrong one for our purposes, but again Ian White is a decent player too. Peter Wright is through, Wade showed his usual mettle to drag himself through his tie and Glen Durrant put paid to Adrian Lewis to set up a meeting with a decidedly average at the moment MVG.
That match, between the BDO and PDC reigning champs is to be the basis of our investment today. Van Gerwen was not brilliant against Steve Beaton and he entered that tie off the back of some big defeats and for him decidedly poor averages. As mentioned in our last article the odds of the field against him went from 11/10 to 2/1 on pre-tournament because of his recent struggles so we’re going against the Dutchman today. Durrant has put in quite a shift in qualifying for the World Matchplay given how long he’s been on the PDC circuit and he dealt with Adrian Lewis pretty comfortably in the first round. The BDO couldn’t offer him any more challenges so he finally jumped ship this year, hunting for more glory and of course better prize money.
Over a decent run of matches there isn’t anybody who’s dominated against Durrant and he has a 7-2 victory over van Gerwen to look back on from May. Although the sample size is limited Durrant has a decent record against most of the field in this tournament too. The scale of the occasion shouldn’t be a problem either with some huge battles taking place over his run of three consecutive BDO World titles. Conversely he should be relishing the chance to take on the PDC number one and put him in his place. MVG will have to really up his game to get through to the next round.
Unfortunately the bookmakers have erred on the side of caution and made Durrant 5/2 for this when normally we’d expect twice that. Either of those prices would always be more reflective of the bookies balancing their books than representing Durrant’s true chances so we’re going to conscientiously object to playing their game. Instead we’ll take the Middlesbrough man on the outright market knowing that if he wins we’ll almost certainly have a decent cash-out option after the match if we want it.
