Here we are then, the traditional curtain raiser to the new season. The two best teams in the country and maybe Europe will fight it out for a trophy that that isn’t a trophy depending on which manager you believe. If your team wins it all well and good but if you lose, well, it’s just the Community Shield isn’t it?
A host of players from both teams have been involved in summer tournaments such as the Nations League, the Cup of Nations and the Copa America so some reshuffling will almost certainly take place. That won’t stop either manager from putting out a decent team though and we should be in for an entertaining game. As the game is essentially a friendly a more relaxed atmosphere, even if only slightly between these two sides, will hopefully lead to plenty of goalmouth action.
The first thing that stands out when looking at the odds for the game is how big Liverpool are. You could barely put a cigarette paper between them last season and this match is about as 50/50 as it gets. Liverpool’s availability at 3/1 then looks strange to say the least. They are maybe suffering more from their squad’s summer activities than Man City but that’s the only thing you can point to.
We’ve got two teams who know they will need to be at their best at the end of the season, not now. They’ll never be truly bad but they will not be near the levels that both teams showed at the end of last season. There will be vulnerabilities on both sides, Liverpool in particular have shown that defensively in pre-season, so either team stopping the other from scoring could prove problematic to say the least. Couple that with Liverpool’s inflated match odds and we’re backing the red team to win and both teams to score at 11/2.
