Maria Sharapova is back, again, and looking to make something of this year following her first round exit at Wimbledon. 5-0 down in the final set she was apparently in too much pain to see the match out, we’re sure there were no sour grapes involved at all.
Her opponent then was Pauline Parmentier who was ranked in the 80s where Sharapova finds herself now and it’s hard to argue with that. She’s barely played this year due to injury and aside from the Australian Open six months ago she hasn’t had any sort of run in any event. Largely, when faced with an opponent with a higher ranking she will come out second best. Sometimes just being match fit, which the Russian can’t be, is enough to gain victory over Sharapova.
Tonight in Canada she faces the Estonian Anna Kontaveit who reached no 14 in the world earlier this year, residing at the moment at nineteen. She is young, quick and adept on all surfaces and has gained victories over most of the big names on the women’s tour. Her first serve percentage is among the best in the game so she’s hit considerably less double faults than most. Sharapova’s form is still more than questionable in this area.
Peak Sharapova would be favourite for this of course but it’s hard to remember when that was. There’s little evidence in recent memory to suggest that she should be 4/5 for this match and there’s no historical dominance given that they’ve only met once (although the Russian did prevail on that occasion). We’re backing Kontaveit then at 57/50 with Matchbook for 1.5 points. This tie is on BT Sport at around midnight so we’ll be watching and having a further 0.5 points should Sharapova gain an early break. That would allow us to gain some extra value but that’s an optional extra given the timings involved.
