There were very contrasting fortunes for Liverpool and Chelsea on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. The Reds clinically put Norwich away 4-1 on Friday night while Chelsea got their pants pulled down 4-0 at Old Trafford.
Neither were probably as good or bad as the scorelines suggest though. Liverpool did let the visitors have chances and there were a few uneasy moments at the back for the best defence of last season. Chelsea on the other hand dominated the first half, hit the woodwork twice and forced De Gea to make 7 saves.
The Blues did look woeful at the back though with Zouma looking the shakiest. Up front Abraham was toothless and we fancy Giroud to get the nod here after his 11 goals Golden Boot in the Europa League winning campaign last year. That’ll help Chelsea from set pieces as Pedro, Mount and Jorginho aren’t exactly giants.
Klopp’s men will be licking their lips having seen what Rashford and Martial were able to do on Sunday. The extra rest time for Liverpool won’t hurt either and they looked fit as fleas in both the Norwich match and the Community Shield the week before.
It’s hard to see Liverpool not winning this but that fact isn’t lost on the bookies who are offering odds as low as 1/2 for The Reds to win in 90 minutes. We think we have found a nice value bet for the match though;
Market: Half With Most Goals
Selection: 2nd Half
Bookie: William Hill
Basically we think that Chelsea will be overly mindful of another humilation and so, play a little deeper and more cautiously. Liverpool may actually elect to give up a little possession knowing that with Salah, Origi/Mane and Firminho they can rip Lampards’ men on the break. With that said, let’s make the above bet with the thought that Liverpool will break Chelsea’s defence eventually and hopefully that can be seen more so in the 2nd half rather than 1st.
