Michael van Gerwen has finally got his mojo back having won in Australia last week and he is the favourite on Friday as the World Series hits Auckland. The draw has been made already and is listed below with seedings.
(1) Peter Wright v Damon Heta
James Wade v Craig Caldwell
(4) Daryl Gurney v David Platt
Raymond van Barneveld v Cody Harris
(2) Michael van Gerwen v Kyle Anderson
Gary Anderson v Haupai Puha
(3) Rob Cross v Warren Parry
Simon Whitlock v Ben Robb
Rob Cross unfortunately couldn’t weigh us in last time and that combined with MVG’s victory has seen him, Gary Anderson and van Gerwen end up in the same half of the draw. We won’t be touching that with the proverbial bargepole so as usual we’ll be looking to the other half for our pick.
When we look at the top half it’s pretty easy for once to strike through a number of them in our first pass. James Wade has been awful so he goes straight away. Damon Heta has come back down to earth from his win two weeks ago so we’ll rule him out too. Barney’s had one good match so far and faces a difficult opener against one of the best of the domestic players. Simply put while we’re big fans he can’t be trusted, although the 40/1 seems a little generous.
Peter Wright is the number one seed but an 8-0 demolition at the hands of MVG, following a first round exit the week before does not inspire any confidence. There’s some talent among the other ‘locals’ but a shock like we had in Brisbane is hard to foresee here. The one name that truly stands out is Daryl Gurney.
Gurney beat van Gerwen in Brisbane, before losing to Rob Cross in the semi-final. Last week he made the final although MVG got his revenge that time. Gurney is number 3 in the world right now and losing to the top 2 in the world is no disgrace, especially with the first MVG win in mind. As he can’t meet either until the final and the rest of his side of the draw is in disarray we have no choice but to get behind him with half a point each way at 10/1.
