We have an exciting looking fight in store on Saturday night as Britain’s Anthony Yarde takes on Russia’s Sergey Kovalev at light heavyweight.
‘Krusher’ Kovalev is a former title holder near the end of his career and coming off 3 defeats in his last six fights, including two stoppages. At the opposite end of the spectrum is Yarde, a pro for only four years with a savage hit and 17 KO wins in 18 bouts. There’s a lot we could say about Yarde but it’s easier but to get a full idea of the devastation he can cause by checking out his youtube highights. He’s called ‘The Beast’ for a reason and in a sport where many cherry pick opponents this comes across as a strange choice for Kovalev.
The Russian has fought better opposition by quite some way and is fighting at home but somehow we don’t think the judges will be involved too much in this. Losing twice to Andre Ward can easily be forgiven – everybody lost to Andre Ward – but the manner of defeat in the rematch and the loss to Eleider Alvarez pose questions about his ongoing ability and to an extent his heart. We don’t know for sure what Yarde can handle from an opponent like Kovalev but we know that if he lands like Alvarez did the fight will be over. There are rumours that Canelo Alvarez is willing to go up two weight classes to take on Kovalev which also tells us something.
Although Kovalev won the rematch with Eleider Alvarez on points there are enough nagging doubts for us to oppose him. Yarde, for now, does not have any of those issues so we’re on Betfred’s 9/4 for a KO win to a 1 point stake.
