Djokovic has already gone and lamentably Roger Federer joined him in the early hours thanks to Grigor Dimitrov. We say lamentably because he was due to face the player we’re backing today and his elimination has halved the outright odds. That player is Daniil Medvedev who looks best equipped of the remaining players to offer a challenge to Rafa Nadal should they meet in the final.
Still, despite his win over Federer we’d rather take on Dimitrov so we can accept the 6/1 that is available on Medvedev to win the title at this stage. Medvedev needed only four sets v Wawrinka and has a little more recovery time versus the five sets that Dimitrov needed to earn his semi-final place. We’re told that the treatment the Russian needed in that match is not a problem and he’ll be fighting fit for the next match.
This year Medvedev has equalled or bettered his previous runs in each of the Grand Slams although clearly he doesn’t like the clay at Roland Garros. That’s not important here though, the most relevant info is his taking the Cincinnati title a few weeks ago that put him into the world’s top five. The crowd will likely be against him as he offered them his middle finger this week but he seems to love that and thrive on it. Should Medvedev get the better of the Bulgarian we’ll revaluate for the final but for now we’re backing him for half a point with 888 Sport.
