It doesn’t seem fair that the big leagues stopped when they’d only just started but that is the situation we find ourselves in. The International break isn’t everyone’s cup of tea so we’re looking on this occasion to the League of Ireland for our wager.
Of the two matches tonight Dundalk v Cork is the bigger one but we like a first goalscorer bet in the other game, featuring Finn Harps versus St Patrick’s Athletic. When choosing someone to score first we like the player and the team to be in form if possible and Finn Harps and Harry Ascroft meet those criteria.
The Harps have won three of their last four, the exception being the last game where they visited champions elect Dundalk. An already tough game became near impossible to win when the away side went down to ten men in the first half and a 5-0 drubbing was the end result. Dundalk have handed out a number of similar punishments this season though so that outcome is not a deal breaker for tonight’s fixture.
The latter two of the three wins have come courtesy of Harry Ascroft with a header in the first and a cracking finish from the edge of the area in the second. With two winning goals in his last three games the 28/1 with William Hill looks enticing so we’ll take half a point each way (first and anytime) on him to open the scoring.
