Scotland take on Belgium tonight needing a win for in order to turn their Euro 2020 fortunes around, in this group at least. They do have a fall back plan of the Nations League play-offs and they’ll more than likely need it. Losing to Russia last time out has left them in dire trouble and 3 points v Belgium, who have won every game so far, is the only way that the Tartan ship can be righted. Steve Clarke has a point when he says he is relishing the game as expectations are minimal. A tricky away trip to Eastern Europe would come with expectations whereas this game has none.
As far as Belgium are concerned, even without Eden Hazard they represent a threat to every team on the planet. A simple warm-up to this game in San Marino brought a comfortable 4-0 win and allowed Roberto Martinez to rest some of his squad in preparation for tonight. One of those men was Romelu Lukaku who we are backing today.
Relaxed and refreshed according to Martinez, Lukaku could well explode in this game with Scotland being the unfortunate victims. The racist abuse that the big Belgian suffered from Cagliari fans last week has now been added to by Inter fans and Scotland may end up paying the price. The open letter from Inter ultras saying that the abuse was not actually racist was entirely ridiculous and has not helped the situation at all.
Back to the football though the abuse came with Lukaku about to take a penalty which he subsequently scored. He didn’t take penalties at Manchester United and rarely if at all at Everton but having scored that one he may be the choice to step up in Hazard’s absence against Scotland. With Russia getting two against Scotland, and they should have had more despite being dominated early on, the Belgians can be expected to score more. We’ll therefore take Lukaku to score two or more goals at 11/2 with Betfred.
