Barcelona are a bit of a conundrum at the moment. Injuries have been a problem sure but the contrast between their home and away form at the moment is stark, even this early in the season. At home they’ve won both games 5-2 whereas away they are yet to win a game. Three road trips have seen them record two defeats and one draw. In six games thus far, including the Champions League, they’ve opened the scoring once only.
Tonight they host Villareal who have a point more than Barcelona now having lost just one game this season. They managed a 4-4 draw with Granada on day one – Granada beat Barcelona 2-0 at the weekend – and they took the lead twice at home to Real Madrid and but for Gareth Bale would have taken all the points as opposed to just one. Two subsequent wins have shown that we should pay close attention to the Yellow Submarine when playing supposedly superior opponents and we’re going to do just that today.
Whether Villareal can actually win is something worth looking at when odds of 8/1 are available. If they were at home we’d certainly get involved but Barca’s only shows of strength have been at the Nou Camp so we’ll leave it this time. Win or draw is also something we’ve considered at around 5/2 but in the end the first goalscorer option is the one we prefer.
Barcelona, even at their best, tend to concede goals and they’re clearly not at their best at the moment. Both home wins saw two goals conceded so Villareal ought to get themselves on the scoresheet at least. But while Barca are struggling to hit the net first Villareal have done so in all five league games regardless of the end result. Gerard Moreno has played his part getting the opener in three of those five games and two of the last three. Backing him to score first at 10/1 seems more likely than an overall Villareal win at 8/1 so we’re going with the former, covering ourselves by also backing him to score at any time.
