Andy Murray’s comeback continues to gather momentum in China and he’s racking up back to back wins for the first time in a long time. The doubles experiment seems to have helped him along and the action last week and this will play a part in preparing him for the Australian Open early next year. Whether he can reach the heights he once did remains to be seen but so far things are looking promising. As far as this tournament is concerned though we feel he’s coming to the end of the road.
Betting at 2/1 on is not something we take lightly but when we consider what we’re getting at that price we think Dominic Thiem is worth it against the Scotsman. Thiem has multiple wins against Nadal, Djokovic and Federer and once they’ve gone, or quite possibly even before then, he looks to be the man who will sit at the top of the rankings as a result of picking up Grand Slam titles. Thiem contracted a virus around the US Open which must have played a part in his early exit but he’s well over that now and rested as a result.
If he was facing peak Murray this might be a different proposition but that isn’t the case here. Even if it were the victories against the other big names would still make a bet tempting. For Murray’s part while he’s had some nice wins, as mentioned above, he hasn’t faced anyone of Thiem’s calibre on this journey yet. While the form is good it is tarnished slightly by who he has played and fitness remains a worry at the moment. Again while the odds aren’t outstanding you could stick £20 on before bedtime and wake up to find £30 in your account – there are plenty of worse ways to start the day than that.
