Another international break is about to hit us so this weekend brings us the last round of European club fixtures for a couple of weeks. The top leagues as well as the big European competitions are in their swing now and as a result we have some meaningful form and statistics to work from. While many eyes will be on the West Ham v Palace game on Sky this evening we’ll be tuning into the match between Schalke and Cologne on BT Sport.
While Schalke flirted with relegation last season they managed to finish second in the Bundesliga the year before and so far it seems that they are returning to that kind of form. Their six matches so far have seen a draw and a forgivable defeat to Bayern Munich followed by four wins on the spin. One defeat in six for Schalke comes in stark contrast to visitors Cologne who have managed only one victory in the same time period. Although it’s still early in the season Cologne have a goal difference of -11 already while Schalke are scoring 2 goals a game on average.
Cologne’s solitary win is a strange one, an away win at the otherwise unbeaten Freiburg, but it’s likely that as the season progresses it will say more about Freiburg than Cologne. However we’ll take it into account along with the nascent state of the season and back Schalke for two points rather than three at 8/13.
