Well the Czech Republic away game was always supposed to be the hardest game in the group but defeating England at odds of around 6/1 still came as a surprise. Qualification for Euro 2020 should not be a problem still but defensive issues remain and were it not for Jordan Pickford the scoreline could have been even worse.
Bulgaria look just the kind of opponents that Southgate would be looking for right now though as they sit bottom of the group with no wins from six games. The reverse fixture saw a 4-0 win for England but for context purposes the Czech Republic were beaten 5-0 at Wembley. The Czechs are yet to visit Bulgaria but they edged the first match 2-1 after going behind in the third minute.
An England loss in Sofia would appear to be improbable but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be problems. Set-pieces are a concern and the expected wholesale changes to the England starting eleven might prove a hindrance rather than a help – we will find out tonight. What we do know is that the Czech Republic are better than Bulgaria but not necessarily by much. We also know that at home Bulgaria have scored in seven of their last eight games.
All things considered then a very possible outcome is that Bulgaria continue their good home scoring record but ultimately lose to the better team. As a result we’re backing England to win and both teams to score at 5/2 with 888 Sport.
