Wolves aren’t the first team to struggle with Thursday night fixtures and they won’t be the last. On the face of it they seem to be coming to terms with it, especially in light of the recent win over Manchester City. We’ve delved a bit deeper into that though and we’re not so sure. Yes, Wolves are a decent team with an excellent manager but something doesn’t quite ring true about their status as odds-on favourites for their trip to Bratislava.
Looking at the City game first of all the statistics tell a story that doesn’t match the result. City dominated in every respect bar the crucial goals for column. 76% possession, 18 shots and 9 corners show that Wolves were under the cosh for the most part. City were missing a number of players along with that and it was a defensive error that Wolves took advantage of to open the scoring with ten minutes to go. Guardiola’s men were left open as they pushed for an equaliser and conceded again in the 94th minute.
We’re not trying to put a downer on a great win but looking at Wolves in other games we can see that their recent unbeaten streak is not all that it’s made out to be. Beating bottom of the table Watford and being held at home to 4th from bottom Southampton isn’t all that great. Make what you will of the draw with Manchester United but they probably should have lost that match. The Liverpool result aside that now looks like dropped points against a team that can’t win on the road this season.
As for Slovan Bratislava they’ve already won 15 games this season, losing only twice. They’re in a weaker league of course but their Europa League performances have eclipsed those of Wolves so far. Bratislava got a draw at Braga whereas Wolves lost at home to them. Wolves nicked a 1-0 win at Besiktas while Slovan beat them 4-2, admittedly at home. With two teams in such similar form we’d expect closer odds but the 4/1 on the home side looks worth chucking a free bet on at the least. The concerns about the strength of the Slovakian league are the only thing stopping us from doing more.
