Liverpool host Genk tonight in the return fixture from their 4-1 win in Belgium two weeks ago.
In an ideal world they’d be able to rest a number of regulars ahead of the weekend visit of Manchester City but the defeat to Napoli early on makes doing that a more risky proposition. A win this evening – along with the assumption that Napoli also gain three points – would effectively kill the group with two games to go. Anything else and they’ll still have two particularly tricky fixtures to negotiate in order to qualify.
Some changes will almost certainly be made though and this is where James Milner comes into play. Although used sparingly in the league Klopp has trusted Milner in the League Cup and in Europe to hold the fort while some of the ‘stars’ get a break. Milner has done the job he’s been asked to do in those ties scoring three goals in seven games. He still seems to be the number one penalty taker when on the pitch and he of course scored the last minute winner against Leicester from the spot.
Genk are the worst team in the group but they had their moments in the home fixture. Even so, with changes to the starting eleven, of which we expect Milner to be part, Liverpool at home should have more than enough to put a few goals past their visitors. With the Yorkshireman on penalty duties too he looks an attractive proposition at 12/1 to open the scoring with the possibility of a reshuffled front three. As Liverpool will expect to get on the scoresheet a number of times we’d still be well rewarded if Milner nets at any point so we’ll be on him each way.
