Our William Hill Honest Review is a non-biased look into one of the most recognized bookmakers in the world. We will touch on what areas of the site to avoid like casino and it’s bonuses. Whilst also giving a nod to the areas that work well or can be exploited.
The powerhouse bookmaker has a huge online presence, successful apps/mobile sites and also has over 2,000 betting shops across the UK. The bookie even powers sportsbooks in Las Vegas and offers those in Nevada the facility to bet sports through their app.

Back in 1934, William Hill Bookmakers were founded. Interestingly, at that point you couldn’t legally gamble in Great Britain. The company has had an interesting ownership history with Sears Holdings taking it in 1971. By 1988 it was Grand Metropolitan and then a controversial sale to Brent Walker in 1996 in which the seller had greatly manipulated figures to suggest much higher sales than was true.
An investment bank from Japan called Nomura managed to aquire the company for a touch over £700 million in 1997. They didn’t hold onto the company long but landed a nice touch when selling it less than two years later for £825 million to funds managed by Cinven and CVC Capital Partners.
The company hit the London Stock Exchange in 2002 and things were going swimmingly. The Chief Exec David Harding managed to land a £2.84 million bonus in 2003 and there were purchases made of Sunderland and Newcastle dog tracks & stadiums. By 2004 Harding was selling shares to cover a costly divorce and the company’s stock dropped to the tune of near £75 million.
2008 saw a new Chief Exec installed, Ralph Topping. This was a terrific rags to riches story that saw Topping start out working in a William Hill betting shop in Glasgow in ’73 and thirty odd years later he was top dog.
Late 2008 saw a partnership form with Orbis and Playtech, this was largely done to try and tackle their failing online presence. Since then there have been several purchases and bids made for expansion. A failed effort to hit India in 2009, Nevada entry came in 2012 and in 2013 Australian firms Sportingbet, Centrebet and Tom Waterhouse were bought. Crownbet took the Australian operation over in 2018 and marked the end of William Hill’s presence there.
Many people enjoy William Hill Sports Betting because they feel secure. Particularly so in the UK where you will see the logo/name on shops in any town centre. It gives gamblers a sense that the company is legit and having money in an account there is safe.
Their integrity is high and given the incredible number of transactions both online and in shops, the horror stories are few and far between. The sports product is their main attraction and naturally they offer a massive array of betting markets.
William Hill stands out when it comes to US Sports as it’s obviously a major focus for them given their presence across the pond. They can be commended for their extensive offers for NFL and NBA.
The platform is solid without being spectacular at William Hill Online. Users experience isn’t the best with too many clicks needed for navigating to a Premier League match for example and a site full of small text.
William Hill’s casino has all the usual slots, table games and live table options you would expect. They offer virtuals and bingo too for those that are inclined.
William Hill’s online poker is provided by the iPoker network. Getting a game is normally pretty easy at low to mid stakes Hold Em and Omaha. A little disappointing is the fact they don’t offer any other games. The don’t have an app for poker, it can be played instantly via the website.
William Hill New Customer Free Bets offer is pretty simple and in the top 50% of betting sites when it comes to generosity.
1) Simply click here to sign up
2) Use the promo code ”C30”
3) Make your first bet of £10 or more at odds of at least 1/2 (1.50) and you’ll get your free bets dropped into your account
Remember to always read bookie T&Cs about what bets qualify etc.
Part of the iPoker network, William Hill offers download poker client on laptop and desktop. For mobile users there is the instant play version on the website. Note: there is no specific William Hill Poker app
The William Hill Poker Bonus is simple to claim, if you have the cash to deposit then there’s a rewarding £1200 on the table for poker players. That’s based on a 100% match, so you will need to deposit £1200 to take full advantage. You can claim anything from £10 – £1200 dependant on your deposit to the poker client/instant play.
The bonus will be released in £5 increments as you earn WHPs (William Hill Points). You pick them up by playing real money cash games, SnGs and tournaments.
Their tennis betting product both pre-match and live leaves plenty to be desired. A poor selection of bets, high margin in the odds and a weak live streaming package are just some of the reasons it falls short of other betting sites.
William Hill Football is a massive money spinner for the bookmaker. Alarm bells should be going off in the heads of the smart gamblers when we say that. When it comes to bookmaker margin on football betting, William Hill are one of the stingiest bookies out there.
You’ll see that at some betting sites you often get odds of 10/11 for both sides in a 2-way market, more generous sites will even stretch to 19/20 each of two. Unfortunately, even on top level football, William Hill football odds can sometimes be 17/20 both sides. That is a 107% book, 7% higher than what should be a true 100% book.
Lots of William Hill’s football bets are placed in betting shops using the A4 coupons you see sat all along the walls of the office. Those coupons encourage customers to place accumulators, you’ll often see ”Pick 5 Winners To Guarantee 12/1” or some similar rubbish. As we often say here on site, don’t bet accumulators and definitely don’t do it if the bookie is encouraging you to do so.
A pretty good offer for football betting at William Hill is the William Hill Golden Goal Promo. On select matches if you back a team to win and they score the first goal, you will be paid out as winner even if they go on to draw or lose the match.
The maximum profit payout is £50 and you’ll also receive your qualifying stake back. Read through the following and check on site to make sure you understand how it works.
For example if you put £20 on at 5/2 and your team scores first but fails to win the match, you will get £70 back in cash. That’s £50 for the profit generated at 5/2 and also the stake which provided you with that £50. If you were to bet £200 at Evens and your team scored first but failed to win, you would only receive £100 for the Golden Goal promotion. That would be £50 profit and £50 of your £200 stake which qualified you for the promo.
Second only to football betting, comes William Hill Horse Racing. Masses of punters will fill out betting slips online or in betting shops to bet on horses normally running in the UK, sometimes Ireland.
Hills offer a wide array of different specials for the day’s racing. Different offers will appear online to those that are available on the betting terminals in shops. In truth most of the offers are pretty tight and definitely not beatable long term. You’ll still get those annoying voices on William Hill Radio trying to encourage you to bet them though.
Hills offer a pretty unique promotion for horse racing with the William Hill High 5 Promo. The offer works on select meetings specified by William Hill. You bet on a horse to win the race and if it does so by 5 lengths or more, you receive a 15% bonus on your winnings.
They normally run one High 5 meeting a day and they will be jumps meets where winning distances will often exceed 5 lengths. The race you bet into must have 6 runners or more to qualify and the bonus is paid in free bets. As always, check latest T&Cs on site for full picture.
We have found William Hill Limit Customers stories to be plentiful for those taking bets overnight on horse racing. Similarly, several reports of customers being limited after betting ITF tennis pre-match even for £20/30 stakes. Basically you will initially start getting referred to trader for small amounts and after a bit of analysis they will normally wield the axe and limit your bets.
William Hill Cash Out is offered on most sports but as we often say, is rarely the sharp play. You are giving margin away in the cash out transaction and did so when placing your original bet. The cash out algorithm is not there to help the customers, it’s advent was just designed to take more money from customers.
You can use Cash In My Bet which is what William Hill call the service both fully and for partial cash out. There is normally a smarter way to cover a position though, which may include backing another outcome(s) in the event.
William Hill Casino has several different types of casino offerings under different names. On site they have Casino, Games, Vegas, Live Casino and Macau. All effectively the same thing and all unbeatable for the customer and all should be avoided.
William Hill Vegas has a large spread of table games, mostly blackjack with various different sidebets and the occasional progressive jackpot.
The casino bonus at William Hill is slightly different to most, there is a very small amount to deposit and you get 7x as a bonus, read on for more information.
The William Hill Casino Bonus is pretty simple and will appeal to the majority of punters as you can benefit to the tune of 300% on your bonus, up to £300. There is a 40x turnover requirement and a quite poor 7 days to work through it.
To avail the offer, follow these instructions;
Create an account with William Hill
Deposit a minimum of £10, maximum of £100 and when prompted, accept the bonus
Remember to read the T&Cs, take care when it comes to deposit methods. Certain games will be weighted more when turning over the bonus.
William Hill Poker is part of the ipoker network. Huge network with plenty of recreational players and hence the games are accessible and fairly soft. They only offer Hold Em and Omaha games.
The VIP system/rakeback is based on WHPs (William Hill Points), the more you earn the more rake you receive back. Convert points into £s within the account section on the download client. That will work on desktop or laptop but on mobile you will be restricted to instant play poker.
There is plenty of cash on offer with the William Hill Poker Bonus. It does take a fair outlay though to take full advantage. A 100% matched deposit bonus up to £1200. Fairly simple to avail if you have the cash, obviously you can take a bonus on lesser amounts starting at £10.
Sign up by clicking here
Make a deposit of at least £10, upto £1200
Click accept bonus and hit the tables
Read T&Cs but fairly simple, your bonus will be released in £5 increments as you play cash tables, Sit N Gos and tournaments.
We can’t quite fathom the excitement but William Hill Scratchcards are attracting a certain type of customer to the website. No need for finding a 2p piece to scratch off a card in the street or getting your fingernails dirty while scratching in the local Tesco.
They have the most popular scratchcards out there at the moment, King Kong, Ted, Harley Davidson and even a Dennis Taylor themed scratchcard!
Recently William Hill Mobile got an upgrade. Their mobile site is still not great to navigate but is the only place you can get their Daily Bet Boost. We think that’s a big error from William Hill by restricting the Bet Boost to mobile but there must have been a reason behind it.
That Bet Boost applies to bets up to £20 but for a period of time was a far more generous £200 according to several customers. The bet boost can be used on multiples if that way inclined but remember we advise you never bet accumulators!
Sign up to William Hill by clicking here, place a £10 bet and immediately receive 3x £10 free bets to your account. Basic T&Cs apply like minimum odds 1/2 (1.5) for triggering the free bet.
Who is bigger Ladbrokes or William Hill?
If taking Ladbrokes solely and not as a double act with Coral, then William Hill just edges the amount of betting shops across the UK. Ladbrokes shops seem to have been on the decline over the last few years. They also have less prestigious sponsorship deals than William Hill.
Is William Hill the oldest bookie in England?
No, William Hill is a relative newcomer even at over 80 years old when compared to Ladbrokes who are reported to be 200 years old.
What is Golden Goal football promo?
As covered earlier, the Golden Goal is a promo that William Hill run on selected top level football. If you predict the team to score the first goal in the game, you will be paid out in cash even if they go on to only draw or lose the match. T&Cs apply naturally but it’s a pretty decent promo and can obviously be exploited.
What payment methods do William Hill take?
William Hill’s payment methods and minimum deposit amounts are as follows;
Visa Delta £5
Visa Electron £5
Bank Transfer £10
You can withdraw to all the above deposit methods, some will be quicker than others. Generally speaking, e-wallets are the fastest way to withdraw from William Hill.
